Works by Richard Riverin
Biography of Richard Riverin
I was born in Quebec in 1942. As a self-taught artist, I developed a unique technique using palette knives and my own paint mixture. My art is characterized by a soft sheen, a very thick texture, a sense of spontaneity, a diversity of subjects and compositions, and a harmony of soothing colors. I became an artist at the age of 57 in Naples, Florida, where I owned an art gallery. Due to financial difficulties, I could no longer afford to buy art; my only way out was to paint the pictures myself.
With 30 years of experience as a gallery owner, I was familiar with art market trends and knew that my work had to surpass that of the major artists sold in Naples’ art galleries. I started painting every day and destroying my paintings one after another out of despair. I didn’t have the talent, but I kept painting every day, hating it, praying to God to help me—and a miracle happened. I began creating beautiful paintings; six months later, I was one of the top-selling artists in Naples, Florida, and then one of the most successful exhibitors at ArtExpo New York over a 15-year period. I sold approximately 4,000 original paintings over a 20-year span, which is an unprecedented success for a Canadian artist. I returned to Canada and purchased a large, beautiful space in Old Montreal in 2015. At the age of 78, I closed my gallery on Saint-Paul Street. I will continue to conduct business under the name Galerie Saint-Paul from my home studio. I am also a published science fiction novelist, author of the Ghama-2 trilogy. You can read several of my short stories on this website. In the “Works” section, you will find over 500 original paintings by Riverin, Jaugey, and Moreau currently available.
